About Circuit Neuroscience: amygdala, hippocampus and cortex

Our research helps to define the role of neuronal circuits in emotional memory and other cognitive processes, and how they are perturbed in psychiatric disorders. Main focus is on brain areas, such as the amygdala, hippocampus in rodents and on neocortical circuits in humans, and on the role of neurons types, particularly GABAergic cells. Our research group uses an integrated approach combining functional and structural techniques. Understanding the neural mechanisms controlling cortex-hippocampal-amygdala network activity may eventually lead to novel therapeutic strategies to ameliorate psychiatric disorders.

Techniques/Infrastructure

  • Electrophysiology (whole cell patch clamp in brain slices; juxtacellular recording in vivo)
  • Optogenetics (optotagging recordings, stimulation/inhibition of selected neuronal paths)
  • Imaging (voltage sensitive dyes, calcium imaging)
  • High resolution anatomy (reconstruction of single neuron morphology, synaptic contacts and receptors, immunohistochemistry)
  • Genetic dissection of neural circuits (early genes expression, TRAP, transcriptomics for cell type identification)
